I am not sure of the capacity. It is quite a lot. I use it for brown rice and quinoa. The ratio is 1 1/4 cups more water than rice (2 cups rice, 3 1/4 cups water; 5 cups rice, 6 1/4 cups water, etc.) and it comes out perfect every time. I believe for white rice it is 1/2 cup more water than rice, the brown rice requires more water. I tried to make from instructions using the lines in the cooker but that wasn't accurate so I use this ratio and it is perfect. Hope this helps.

This is done on purpose as it applies to the Japanese cuisine standard of measurement being 1 gō in volume, which is the standard for one serving of rice or sake. In US measurement it equates to approximately 3/4 cup.
