Q: What is the best method to sharpen this style blade?

I have a lot of experience with this blade and IMHO the best method with any recurve is a round ceramic sharpening rod followed up with a strop. Another tip is to never let it get too dull. Use it on a weekend camping trip, come home and touch it up. Solid blade indeed. I own three of these along with its larger 14 and 18 inch siblings.

Q: Does the design of the straps of the scabbard inhibit a fast draw/retreival in a life and death situation?

There is only one strap and it has enough additional strap sticking out past the snap that with a little practice you can unsnap the strap and grab the handle all in one motion. This procedure can me done without looking down at the scabbard. If I personally thought that I about to find myself in a life or death situation, the strap would be unsnapped just like I would take a gun off safety if I felt threatened. Good luck and stay safe. I would not want to be on the receiving end of this machete!

Q: I read the warning. What exactly is toxic with this product?

Who knows? Everything is toxic after a certain point. Could be the oil on the blade from the factory, could be the plastic in the sheath, could be the metal shavings that come off the blade when you sharpen it or the handle material might be toxic if you burn it. Those warnings are too nonspecific to be worth much. Kershaw is a pretty reputable company and you don’t get that way by poisoning your customers. This is a good quality product, and I’m sure you’ll be fine as long as you don’t plan to eat the thing.
