I like this grass a lot. It grows well in heavy shade.
Got this because I have several large trees that provide great shade, but prevent most types of grass from thriving. I spread some of this seed in the shady bare ground. It germinated quickly (3 days) and is now about 4 or 5 inches long. Not sure how well it will work in areas that get lots of sun. I have ordered several more bags to use for bare spots. The only downside with this type of grass is falling (and accumulating) large leaves. (Red Oak, Bur Oak, and Magnolia) tend to accumulate, get wet from either sprinkler or rain and then set on the grass, which kills the grass. We have rake the leaves soon after they fall. Leave them un-raked or unmulched and you will end up with unsightly bare spots . The grass has tall thin dark green leaves. Bermuda grass and Saint Augustine does not do well in heavy shade.

Grows well in full shade clay
This was exactly as advertised. I used on about 200 square feet of North Carolina clay in the dead of summer under my deck (which is 10ft above ground). I used a metal rake to “till” the clay and then sprinkled some topsoil over the whole area. Then used a hand spreader and emptied the entire bag on this space. I watered it according to the directions and then within days I saw sprouts growing. It’s been a few weeks and the grass is all over the area with just a few patches missing. The grass is currently two inches high and the space is in almost complete shade since it is under my deck. Absolutely worth the money for this seed. We’ll see how it holds up long term, but for the price I am very satisfied.

Didn't Work for Me
I bought two bags of heavy shade grass seed. I planted one bag one week and the other two weeks later. Area was on timer water system watering 30 minutes early morning, noon and evening. Good soil on ground, raked into loose soil then covered with organic top soil. Area was fertilized two weeks before planting. Very disappointing results. Maybe 5-10% germinated and grew but died out about one week later. Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe I got two bad batches of seed. I wouldn't recommend this product. Wasted big money and many hours of work.

GREAT SHADED AREA SEED
Super dense shade area was not 100% germination and growth but the shaded area that received a little sunlight during the day germinated great and the growth was excellent. Definitely will use again. Might have to reseed the super dense shaded area, but it is still germinating though.

Don’t buy !!!
I sowed this seed last fall , it germinated just fine , looked ok thru the winter . Come spring and warmer temperatures, it greened up nicely after some fertilizer , see second pic . Mid May , we had a couple of weeks of mid 80s , but plenty of rain and manual watering as needed but the grass started looking bad . Now we are having temps in the mid 90s and it’s looking very bad as you can see in the attached pics that were taken about 1 month apart .We had had plenty of rain 1-3” per week , this isn’t in direct sun but it does get morning sun for a few hours , noon to dusk ,it’s shaded . I emailed the manufacturer, zero response .

Low germination rate for me
This product did not work very well for us. Germination rate was very low. I should have just bought a better seed to begin with. Can’t recommend.

Great shade grass
This stuff is fantastic. It grows beautiful grass in places that are totally shaded. I have six trees in my backyard and I have lovely grass.

So far, so green
I used a 3 pound bag of this stuff to fill in patches in a yard I completely resodded two summers ago. Most of the sod died over the last year. Ended up regrowing most of the yard with this stuff. It took a while to get the drainage and moisture right, and the lawn is pretty heavily shaded. I laid a mix of this seed with potting soil (heavy on the seed) and raked it into prepared bald patches. Watered pretty heavily and vigorously at first (daily good soak). It sprouted within 3-5 days and seems to be doing really well. Dark green tone and seems to have rooted into the topsoil well. I'd say it's been superior to anything I've gotten from Scotts. Less expensive too.
