Q: Do the mesh patches on the back wear out quickly

The backpack itself doesn't last, yes lots of compartments but not strong material...in less than 4 months of regular middle schoolers usage: Zipper popping, straps stitches coming undone, corners wearing off...I wish I could get my money back. What I did is i bought more backpacks since so many styles, cool for children to get something new in the middle of the school year...and I have just accepted that these school things are no longer build to last. I am still using my school backpack from 30 years ago, these ones will hardly make it through one school year.

Q: Can I clean straps for sweat odor?

Yes, I would say you could. I would use a Lysol wipes or a hand/face cloth with cold water and mild soap, wash rinse with cold water and let dry. This response is solely my opinion, I do not know it to be a fact that will eliminate the sweat odor. Good Luck

Q: Can I get it monogrammed?

That service is not available for this item on Amazon. It would be easily monogrammed locally.

Q: how is the material of the bag? Is it rough?

I don't think it's rough at all. I find it very comfortable when I am wearing it. Although I only carry my laptop and school books in it. But the material is just like any other backpack I've had in the past.
