How do you set the combo

When the lock is set to the correct current combo, you can push the slider inward (toward the handle) and move the numbers to a new combo.

Why is the inside of this unit not finished like the leather option for this unit? Seems Cheaper..

The cost was substantially less. The internal finish is quite good - firm padding that holds notebook computers solidly in place. The main goal for my use was protection - and that the Alpine Swiss Attache does well.

Is that 3inch inner dimension with stuff in the inner lid organizer? Could it be removed for more room? The things I'll carry come to 3.64" in depth.

The inner lid organizer cannot be removed. It is directly stitched into the lid. The specified 3" inner dimension is deceiving because about an inch of it (and more) is occupied by the organizer. It is a problem I lament, but I do love the look and feel of the case.

Will this case fit in back pack

Very unlikely unless you have a special sized back pack. I tried it just now on my Speedo backpack (normal size) and it was a no go.
