Short and uninspired
As a big fan of the Poptropica online game when I was younger, I bought this game out of curiosity and a cheap price to see how well the game translates to a dedicated gaming system. Apparently, the answer is not well. Poptropica: Forgotten Islands forgoes the basic structure of the online game and tells a "story" about finding the origins of Poptropica, attempting to provide backstory for the main game. It boils the gameplay down to simplistic platforming and occasional fetch quests. None of the puzzles that the original game is known for are present, only small islands that take a few minutes each to explore. The goal of the game is to obtain six artifacts that tell the backstory of Poptropica, along with some side missions to get coins. Coins can be used to unlock new costumes for your character. As it stands, the game is extremely short. I finished the main story and all the side quests in one hour and 45 minutes, and there's really no reason to go back to the game and replay it. Another odd thing to note: the 3D effect is done very poorly in this game. Certain objects pop out of the background and into the foreground, as is the case with many 2D sidescrollers on the 3DS, but it was not done correctly here. Grass on top of mountains will pop out, but not the mountains. Ledges on a pyramid pop out, but the rest of the pyramid stays in the background. It looks sloppy, and I am surprised that Ubisoft developed a 3D function at all if this was the result.

Great game
Son loves this game, but he says there isn’t much to do, and you can beat the whole thing in about an hour. It was like $5, though. Worth it.

Imagine the disappointment of an 11 year old who waited for this to come in the mail, only to be an empty case!
