Bourdain in the Graphic Novel Field
Anthony Bourdain had a unique writing voice and a gift for words, if you’ve read KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL or watched any of his narrated programs you understand how he really understood the craft— his graphic novel projects are often overlooked and while they are not at the level of his “normal” writing Bourdain was struggling to to understand how the collaborative process not just between and artist and writer works, but how the collaboration of words and pictures form a different narrative than just prose does. This was his second or third go round in the field and he was really getting there. Sometimes the stories are a little out there and the art matches that nicely, but this is a really great package to go on your shelf of Bourdain’s works.

True to the Source
As someone who heard or read a bunch of Japanese folk tales growing up, these stories are fairly familiar, but a bunch have been given European clothing to wear, which is fun :) I feel like a bit of the overarching, connective story was a little lost on me, apart from the bit of social commentary (at least that’s the term that initially comes to mind) on those who live lives of excess and conspicuous consumption, particularly while others die of lack of food, etc. Perhaps I’ll catch it in the second reading.

Quick arrival and cool cover art!
Review is based on the artwork on the outside of the book, not the contents. Came quick and is gorgeous, bought it as an Christmas gift and I’m sure they’ll love it. 5/5
