Zatoba American Black Walnut Bread Lame

I don't know how I ever slashed bread without this Lame. This lame is simply the best! The hand crafted handle is exquisite, and definitely worth every single penny. If you buy a 100-pack of Dorco Razor Blades to go with, it should last a lifetime! It is a little hard to store with the blade-in, so I stuck a small nail in the wall above my oven for it to hang from which keeps it out of harms way, ready for use at a moments notice, and saves me from having to remove the blade after being used (and great if you are baking multiple loaves of bread in a row). It is also extremely aesthetically pleasing, so having it out in the open at all times is a pleasure. I wasn't sure about having a straight blade as opposed to a curved one, but not anymore. Suggestion: If you really want to extend the life of this wooden lame, rub some mineral oil on the entire thing (same stuff you put on your wooden cutting boards) when it arrives since the wood seemed to be a little dried out when I got it. I would also re-apply every once in a while to keep the wood hydrated and healthy. Tip: if you want an easy, cheap curved blade, you can use a Popsicle stick, and a dorco razor blade (which I now have plenty of). Just put the stick through the middle of the blade on one side, and snap it through the hole on the other side, and voila! Perfectly curved blade (and unlimited refills)!

I have tried them all and this is by far the best. It’s light, well made and looks great. Buy it

Bought this as a present for a good friend of mine who loves baking as much as do I. Since they're hand crafted each looks different. Mine, bought months ago, is a bit lighter; his is a bit darker in colouration -- obviously just an artifact of the piece of walnut used. But they look and feel wonderful. And they are awesome to use. It comes with some additional blades, which is very nice and you can get more here on Amazon no problem. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves baking bread or who knows someone who does and is looking for a beautiful and stylish gift. Fair warning, if ordering this from the US into Canada the US Postal System seems to use donkey or some other slow conveyance to get the parcel to Canada. It took 4 weeks to get here. I have no idea how that is even possible as you could walk it here faster. The lame was shipped immediately and was well packaged as you'd expect from Amazon. It's just that it took so long to get here...

Not only is this lame beautiful, but it is engineered to be well-balanced in the hand. The supplied blades are super sharp, too. Between the sharp blade and the ergonomic engineering, this tool slashes my sourdough loaves beautifully. Until I purchased this, I tried sharp knives, then a ceramic knife, and finally a double sided razor blade from the hardware store. None came close to the precision cuts I can make with this blade. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five, and it's a big reason, is that it has no cover for the blade, making it a danger to store for anyone with arthritic hands or small children.

Blade slips no matter how hard you tighten the thumb screws. Even tried taking some tape and place in it on the blade to take up some space and it still slips. I wanted to love this. It’s a very nice design. Sorry I didn’t return it within the return window. Hate to leave negative feedback for a small business. The. Lame is beautiful just not functional.

I spoiled myself with this buy and was surprised that it really does make cuts into dough better than sharp knife or other solutions. It is a nice piece of craftsmanship on the walnut and fits very nicely in hand when using. It is not easy to replace blades and I would not rush it and would pay close attention to avoid slicing a pinky. Look at the picture before you start so you are actually trying to install new blade correctly. I am not saying it is really dangerous, I am saying it is a very sharp blade, going into a tight slot, so be patient, have good light if your eyes are aging, and have fun using it. I have used it to make cuts in a variety of dough. Very heavy whole wheat breads, high hydration breads, ciabatta, baguettes, different white loaves and such. It does the job well on all the doughs. I do make sure to clean the blade well after use as once dough dries on them, you might as well change the blade. It was above what I really needed to make bread. But, it is a nice tool that makes me happy to use and does an excellent job. My feeling is if you are committed to making bread and actually make it, this is a great tool A great gift for the baker in your family.

The quality of this looks identical to the lame sold by Williams-Sonoma but for a fraction of the price. The cuts are clean and accurate every single time. I switched to this after years of using a curved lane and will never look back. This makes scoring loaves a million times easier and doesn’t cause dough to drag. The blades it comes with are sharp and easy to install, but you just have to be careful not to cut yourself given that. It was absolutely worth the price for how functional it is and the quality of the product.

Correspond parfaitement à la description. La prise en main est excellente. Le manche en noyer est très beau. La lame de rasoir tient parfaitement bien dans la fente ; on peut même l'orienter en fonction du style de scarification qu'on veut donner au pain.
