The Complete Painting Course: A Guide to Techniques in Oils, Watercolors and Acrylics Hardcover – April 27, 1988

This book has the most pages of any painting book that I own. It covers everything from landscapes, still life and portraits. The illustrations are clear and easy to understand. this is a very nice book, with buying!

For someone new to the requirements of painting, I found the book very informative. I would have liked for the book to have more poses for nudes but that's a small negative.

For those of you who do not have the time or budget for art college, this is an adequate substitute.It contains many graded lessons that you are supposed to complete to learn how to paint.Even for those like me who have attended art school, this helps me remember past lessons, prevent mistakes and develop skills.It contains basic information on composition, color theory and drawing; all of which are essential to good painting, but it does not labor those points. Its focus is primarily on painting techniques and each lesson build upon the last so that skills are acquired in the right order.Personally, I think some of the examples could be better, more modern, more "painterly." But that is a subjective observation based on my taste, not a critique of the method which is sound.The illustrations are all good, fairly accurate in color reproduction and large enough to see the intent of each lesson.It covers all the major mediums, Oil Acrylic, watercolor, pastel, pencil, charcoal.There are even some smatterings of advanced techniques with inks, mulitmedia and prepared surfaces.It may not be the ultimate or most-advanced tome, but it is certainly a valuable reference and very good as a guided set of exercises that will improve any student's knowledge and skill.What I like most about this book is how it focuses on fundamentals and the terse language. The writer and editors did a fine job of delivering the important information without any fluff or filler.

I’m disappointed in the book. Seems remedial to me.

This is an excellent "painting course" for a beginner painter. It has very easy to follow instructions and step-by-step exercises. As a seasoned painter I would recommend this book to art teachers and students, and also for those who just need a quick refresher course.

For traditioal artists this would be a grat basic source of painting techniques. Not for me. I appreciate his traditional style
