Q: Is there a clear base coat that I could use before the black crackle instead of a solid color on wood?

There's a bunch of tutorials on YouTube so check those out. I cleared the painted surface before I used the crackle and was pleased with my results, but take the ventilation warning seriously! It sits like a fog over the surface even with a fan on so be careful.

Q: Can you use this outdoors

I used it on a plaster face. It's outdoors, has gotten some rain on it, maintained its color. It is under an Eve so it does have some protection, but it did get wet.
